How to Tell the Difference Between Ego and Intuition — And Why It Matters

Okay so this is one of the biggest questions I get asked, and honestly it is one I love talking about because I remember being right where you are — completely confused about which voice was which.

"How do I know if it is my intuition… or just my mind playing tricks on me?"

And here is the thing — sometimes they can feel really similar. You get a thought. You feel something. And then almost immediately you start questioning it. So which one is it? Well, allow me to explain. Because this is where things start to click.

Why This Feels So Confusing in the First Place

Most of us were never taught how to tell the difference between ego and intuition. We were taught to think, to analyze, to logic our way through everything. So when something comes in that does not follow that pattern — it throws us off completely.

Because here is the thing about intuition. It does not explain itself. It does not sit down with you and lay out all the reasons why. It just shows up. And for people who are used to needing things to make sense, that can feel really uncomfortable at first. I get it. But stick with me here.

What Intuition Actually Feels Like

Intuition is simple. And I mean that in the best way possible. It is quiet, it is quick, and it does not argue with you. It might come in as a random thought that just lands out of nowhere. A feeling in your gut that you cannot explain. A knowing — and I mean that word, a knowing — that comes in before your brain even has a chance to catch up with it.

It does not try to convince you of anything. It does not over-explain itself or stick around waiting for you to accept it. It just is. And then it is gone, and your mind swoops in. Which brings me to the ego.

What the Ego Feels Like (This Is Where People Get Tripped Up)

Now here is where things shift. The ego is loud. Not always in volume — but in activity. It replays things. It overanalyzes. It questions everything and tries to make it all make sense in a way that fits neatly into what you already know and believe.

It sounds like "But what if I am wrong?" and "That does not make sense" and "You are probably just overthinking this." And it does not stop after one thought. Oh no. It keeps going and going, dragging you further and further from that original quiet nudge you felt in the first place. Sound familiar? Yeah. We have all been there.

The Simplest Way to Tell the Difference

Okay, let me give you something practical here because I know that is what you actually need. One of my teachers always used to say, "First thought is intuition. Second thought is ego." Now is that going to be 100% perfect every single time? Not necessarily. But it is a really solid place to start.

Because that first thought comes in clean. No noise, no buildup, no drama. And then right after — your mind jumps in. And that is where the confusion begins. So when you are trying to figure out which voice is which, ask yourself: is this the first thought or the fifth? Because by thought number five, you are deep in ego territory folks.

A Real Life Example (I See This All the Time)

Let's say you meet someone new. Your very first thought is "I do not fully trust this person." It just lands. No explanation, no story attached to it. Then a second later your mind goes "Wait, that is not fair. They seem really nice. You are probably just overthinking. Stop judging people." And now you are completely in your head.

That first feeling? That was your intuition. Everything that came after it? That was your ego trying to sort it out, be fair, be logical, be nice. Your ego is not bad by the way — it is just doing its job. But its job is not to guide you spiritually. That is intuition's lane.

Another Way to Look at It

Think of it this way. Intuition feels like a signal. Ego feels like a full on conversation — with itself. One is quick and direct. The other just keeps going. So if you find yourself going back and forth in your head, analyzing the same thought from seventeen different angles, you are probably not in intuition anymore. You left intuition about fifteen angles ago.

Pay Attention to How It Feels in Your Body

Here is another tool I love to share. Instead of trying to figure out which voice is which in the middle of the moment, pay attention to how you feel in your body afterward. Because your body keeps score even when your mind is all over the place.

Intuition tends to leave you feeling clear, neutral, and settled — even if the message was not exactly what you wanted to hear. The ego on the other hand tends to leave you feeling tense, drained, or like you are spiraling. You do not have to label everything perfectly. Just start noticing what brings you back to center and what pulls you away from it. That alone will teach you more than overthinking ever will. And I mean that.

So How Do You Actually Get Better at This?

Practice noticing. That is really it. I know that sounds too simple but I promise you it is the truth. You do not need to force anything or sit there trying to perfectly dissect every thought that comes through. You just need to start becoming aware. Notice your first thought. Notice your second thought. Notice how each one actually feels in your body.

The more you practice paying attention, the easier it becomes to recognize your own inner language. And that right there is the whole game. You are not trying to become someone who never has ego thoughts — that is not realistic and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. You are just learning to recognize which voice is which so you can choose where to put your trust.

Final Thoughts

At the end of the day this is not about getting it right every single time. It is about learning how to recognize your own inner language. Your intuition has a voice. Your ego has a voice. And the more you slow down and actually listen — the more you will start to hear the difference between the two.

It takes practice. It takes patience. And it takes being willing to get it wrong sometimes and learn from it anyway. But I promise you — the more you tune in, the clearer it gets. And one day you will look back and wonder how you ever confused the two in the first place.
